Shankar Bairagi likely to become the chief secretary

Kathmandu, 22 September: The government is likely to assign foreign secretary Shankar Bairagi as the new chief secretary. 

Chief secretary Lokdarshan Regmi is going to retire on 8 October, however, to assign Bairagi to the post of the chief secretary, the government is planning to ask Regmi’s resignation around three weeks earlier to his retirement. The government has assured Regmi to reward him with the ambassadorial position to the UK at the cost of tendering early resignation. 

If Regmi will not tender early resignation, Bairagi will get retirement earlier to 8 October, therefore, the government is learnt to have asked Regmi for his early resignation, according to reports. 

It is said that immediately after the reshuffle of the cabinet, the government is going to assign Bairagi as the chief secretary. 

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is keen to assign Bairagi as the chief secretary, reports state. 

Along with early retirement of Regmi, secretary Chandrakumar Ghimire will lose the opportunity to become the chief secretary. 

If the chief secretary will get retirement only after completing his full tenure, secretary Chandrakumar Ghimire will be the senior-most candidate to get promotion to the post of the chief secretary.
