Finally, on Sunday, 6 September, the Machhindranath chariot pulling festival was organised peacefully. On Thursday, when local youths, who felt invasion on their religion and culture, tried to pull chariot violating the government announced prohibition order, a clash was witnessed between the youths and the police. Several persons including police personnel were wounded on the clash. The government had to announce curfew to avoid a possible confrontation.
The Guthi members belonging to the Machhindranath were unhappy with the government performance as they got the fund to construct the chariot but didn’t get permission to observe the festival. The Guthi members even wrote letters to the concerned authorities and even to the President to observe the festival in a symbolic way. They didn’t get a response from anywhere. They had asked the district administration authority to organize the festival symbolically even by using Nepal police personnel and tractor to pull the chariot.
After the Thursday clash, the district administration agreed to observe the festival in a symbolically, which has satisfied the locals having a strong belief on the century-old festival.
If the district administration had done the same earlier, the Thursday clash would not have been taken place.
