Work on Nagdhunga Tunnel project begins

DHADING, SEPTEMBER 7

Construction of the much-awaited Nagdhunga tunnel project that links Dhadning’s Sisnekhola to Thankot’s Kisipidi has started.

According to Department of Roads, Development Assistance Implementation Chief Arjunjung Thapa, work to open the 2.7-km track from both Kathmandu and Dhading has started.

Explosive materials will be detonated as the track opens.

Compensation dispute, site clearance, COVID fear and Nepali Army’s reluctance to give permission for explosive materials had delayed the construction by one year.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had laid the foundation stone for the tunnel project a year ago. The project is estimated to be completed within three-and-a-half years. Japan’s Hazam Ando Corporation has signed the agreement with the government to construct the project at a cost of Rs 13 billion and 500 million.

As per the agreement, the company will have to complete the project within 42 months and hand over the project to the Nepal government.

Two flyovers, seven small bridges and 11 box culverts will be constructed from Satungal to the tunnel’s entrance in Dhading. Similarly, a servicing station, a café, a fuel station and exhibition site for local products will be constructed at Sisnekhola.
