Kathmandu, September 8

A sister wing of the ruling Nepal Communist Party has objected to the government’s recent decision of ending the suspension of land plot splitting that was in effect for the past three years.

All Nepal Peasants’ Federation, the organisation of farmers close to the ruling party, says the decision was made to give advantages to land mafia and middlemen. The organisation’s coordinator Hari Parajuli and deputy coordinator Chitra Bahadur Shrestha issued a joint statement and said, “The federation, along with all patriotic Nepali farmers, is sad and agitated because of the decision.”

The organisation has demanded that the government immediately cancel the decision and formulate and implement new land laws as per the principles of scientific land reform.

Earlier last week, Land Management Minister Padma Aryal had decided to end the three-year suspension citing ‘practical problems’ of the people and a directive by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority. The decision was made public just on Monday.
