Ishwor Pokhrel promoted or demoted?

Kathmandu, 16 October: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has assigned Deputy Prime Minister Ishwor Pokhrel as the minister looking after the Prime Minister’s Office by keeping the defence portfolio looked after by Pokhrel with himself.

Some media observers have remarked the change as PM Oli’s dissatisfaction against Pokhrel who was involved in different scandals including rewarding Omni Group for medical supplies, nepotism in the political appointment and his cold relations with the Nepal Army.

Media observers have even remarked that Pokhrel has been demoted as the minister without portfolio.

Nevertheless, some observers have remarked that PM Oli has assigned Pokhrel with an important job in the Prime Minister’s Office. As the PMO’s role has increased along with additional responsibilities, the Prime Minister needed a minister. They have remarked that PM Oli has tried to lift Pokhrel as his successor by giving important responsibilities that he was looking after.

Some others have also observed that due to the court case, PM Oli could not include Bamdev Gautam in the cabinet. He has kept the defence portfolio with himself with the plan of rewarding Gautam as the defence minister after the court verdict.

Presently, the PMO is looking after departments such as money laundering, revenue authority, national investigation, among others. Also, the PMO is looking after the projects of national pride. Therefore, the PM has assigned his trusted person as his assistant, say observers.
