CPN on the verge of split

CPN on the verge of split

By Our Political Analyst

Kathmandu, 3 July: Recent developments in the ruling party enjoying the strength of nearly two thirds majority have indicated that the party is on the verge of split.

When all senior leaders developed a front against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli with the plan of finishing Oli camp’s political future, Oli took the decision to end the ongoing parliament session abruptly. President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, extending visible support to Oli, announced end of the session immediately after she received recommendation of the council of ministers the same day on Thursday.

At a time when President’s letter reached to the parliament, Nepal Communist Party’s co-chairman Pushpakamal Dahal was chairing the party standing committee meeting at PM’s official residence in Baluatar. The anti-Oli camp was stunned from the abrupt decision of the government to end the parliament session.

Immediately, Dahal went to meet Oli. The meeting between Oli and Dahal was not harmonious. When Dahal asked about the situation, Oli informed that as Covid-19 pandemic was spreading in an alarming way, it was better to end the parliament session.

Oli blamed his opponents for not allowing him to work free handedly.

Oli, however, said that he has not planned to issue an ordinance related to split of the party. He also didn’t deny on possibility of such an ordinance.

According to sources close to Baluatar, in spite of demand of the opponents, Oli is not going to tender resignation from both the posts – prime minister and party chairman.

Oli believes, specially Madhav Nepal and Dahal have developed the front as per the Indian design to end his political future permanently after he tabled constitution amendment proposal by including new map incorporating Kalapani territory. Therefore, Oli has decided to fight against the joint front developed in the party.

Also, Oli is dissatisfied from his opponents in the party that at the time when there is the need to perform unity among all the political parties to return the Kalapani territory, to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, among other issues, they were demanding Oli’s resignation from both the posts. Although, there is strong pressure from the party workers to keep the party united, the fight between Oli and his opponents is on and there is rare chance of ceasefire, rather, both the sides are trying to strengthen their own camp contributing towards a split in the party.
