Kathmandu, 19 July: Prime Minister and party chairman KP Sharma Oli has avoided a crisis in the ruling Nepal Communist Party by bringing proposal of organising party’s unification national convention in November or December.
Majority of the party secretariat members have agreed on the proposal, whereas, Bamdev Gautam has remained indifferent, Madhav Nepal has opposed it.
Prime Minister Oli asked the secretariat meeting to end the politics of the majority and resolving the crisis by organizing the unification national convention meeting in Mangsir this year.
Nepal cornered again:
Madhav Nepal, senior party leader, who was taking a stance for ousting Oli from both the posts – the prime minister and party chairman – has been cornered again. Immediately after the secretariat meeting, he has reacted that he is going to launch a nationwide campaign against the attitude of the party leaderships. Everything will not be resolved along with the alliance between the two party chairmen, Nepal said.
Oli-Dahal agreement:
Earlier to the party secretariat meeting, the two chairmen held a series of one-on-one meeting and developed an understanding to hold the party unification convention in Mangshir this year. The silent understanding is that PM Oli is not going to give candidature to the post of the party chairman. Oli is going to support co-chairman Pushpakamal Dahal in the national convention, however, Oli will run the government for a full five years’ term.
Presently, Oli will continue both the posts, although, Dahal will look after the party until the party unification convention and Oli will lead the government.
Oli has agreed to reshuffle the cabinet and also some provinces by adjusting leaders from his rival camp.
Why Nepal against the decision?:
Madhav Nepal is preparing as the candidate to the post of the party chairman in the upcoming party unification convention. If Oli and Dahal develop alliance, he will fall in minority in the unification convention securing his defeat in the election. Therefore, he has proposed to change the party leadership from the central committee or a national convention.
In conclusion, for the time being, Oli has avoided the crisis on his political career.
President as the witness of the agreement:
Immediately after the secretariat meeting, both the chairmen went to meet President Bidya Devi Bhandari. It is believed that both the chairmen made commitment to support each other at the presence of President Bhandari.
