Two killed in bike accident in Siraha

Kathmandu, Sept 5 : Two persons were killed in a road accident at Naraha rural municipality along the Siraha-Chauharwa road section. The accident took place when a motorbike heading to Siraha from Chauharwa hit a stationary tractor (Ja 1 Ta 4329).

The deceased are the bike rider and pillion rider. They were on an ‘on test’ bike. The deceased are bike rider Amesh Mahato-19 of Siraha municipality-5 and Sunil Sada-21 of the same place. According to police, they died in course of treatment at Uma Prasad Memorial Hospital. Similarly, a 19-year old Mithlesh Sada is critically injured in the incident and has been rushed to Biratanagar for further treatment.

Meanwhile, two youths are arrested on a charge of gang rape. The arrested are 21-year old Dipendra Mukhiya and 20-year old Dinesh Yadav of Golbazaar Municipality-10. The police received a complaint that girl was reportedly raped by a five-member gang. A search has been mounted for the remaining three members of the gang.

Leopard census to begin in Bhanu

Damauli, July : The Division Forest Office, Tanahun, is preparing to count the number of leopards in Bhanu Municipality. As the cases of leopard attacks sharply rose in the recent times, the Office is working for the leopard census for the management of human-wildlife conflict.
Chief of Office Kedar Baral said that counting of leopards will begin in this fiscal year and the forest areas in the municipality have already been surveyed for this job.

According to Baral, a total of 36 points have been fixed in almost 4,200 hectares of forest land and cameras would be installed in each point to facilitate the counting of the leopards.

Along with leopards, prey species of leopards would also be counted. After the counting of prey species, protection of ponds and grazing lands for the prey animals would be launched, Baral shared.

In Bhanu Municipality alone, three people lost their lives in leopard attacks in a year while two others were killed in other areas in the district.RSS

220 police personnel graduated from basic training

Pokhara, July 23 : A total of 220 police personnel were graduated from a year-long basic training in the Police Training Centre Gandaki, Pokhara. Of them, 160 passed with ‘A’ grade while 60 others with ‘B’ grade.

Chief of Gandaki State Police and Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police, Ghanshyam Aryal, offered insignia to those graduated police personnel here Wednesday.

On the occasion, Aryal instructed the graduated personnel to employ their knowledge, skills and talents in the fields in a professional manner.

Disaster Information management system proves to be a boon

Tikapur, July 23 : The disaster information management system (DIMS) in Kailali district is supporting the folks for risk reduction by providing information to the community prior to the flood.

The DIMS brought in practice a decade ago has proved to be boon for risk reduction in the district.
Information Management Officer at District Emergency Services Operation Centre Chetan Khadka said that the information system has supporting for the reduction of flood-induced damages.

“DIMS is doing good in Kailali. It has protected from the loss of human lives and properties due to timely information,” Khadka added.
In Kailali, water level measurement observation centres have been made in 16 sites while rain gauges are fixed in 19 points to collect the information on possible flood.

The officials deployed in those points immediately disseminate information to the people in lower river basin areas and vulnerable communities for preparedness.

Dambar Nepali, an official working for the stream flow measurement, said that they measure the stream flow three times a day and disseminate the information in the lower river basin areas. “We take measurement every hour during the time of flood,” he added.RSS

Landslides damages a house, 10 more at risk

Baitedi,July 5 : Landslides have been reported in various parts of the district, since the onset of monsoon. On Saturday night, the house of Mangal Aiyer in ward no. 7 of Puchaurdi municipality was buried in a landslide.

The landslide has also posed a risk to 10 more houses in the same locality, said local resident Dev Bahadur Aiyer. The family of Mangal is now taking shelter in another house.

Likewise, in ward no. 3 of the same municipality, the Saturday rain damaged two water mills, a culvert and vegetation. Flood water from the Sapaiya stream washed away two mills and one culvert, said local resident Khem Raj Joshi.

With the culvert over the stream washed away, travelling to the municipality headquarters, ward office and neighbouring Dilasaini rurul municipality has been affected.RSS,File Photo

Woman swept away by river

Baitedi, July 5 : A woman has died after being swept away by the Jamadi river in Puchaurdi municipality. The woman of around 35 years of age is yet to be identified, Chief of Baitedi Police DSP Narayan Prasad Adhikari said.

The body of the woman was found at a place called Girijabagar. Locals saw the body and informed police on Saturday afternoon. Police have begun an investigation into the incident, including identifying the woman.

Public holiday on the occasion of Byas Jayanti

Damauli, July 5 : The Byas municipality has announced a public holiday today on the occasion of Byas Jayanti or Guru Poornima. The decision was taken by the 32nd assembly of the municipality.

Minor drowns in pond

Rajbiraj, July 4 : A minor has drowned while bathing at a pond in Farseth of Rajbiraj municipality on Friday.

Nanda Kishore Shah,11, the son of Rajendra Shah in ward no. 11 of the municipality died in the incident that took place in the evening, according to DSP at the District Police Office Tilak Bharati said. He had reportedly gone to the pond to take a bath along with four friends.

Shah was rescued in an unconscious state from the pond but died on the way to the hospital.(RSS )

People in quarantine on the decline

Janakpurdham, July 4 : The number of people staying in quarantine centres has been decreasing. As of last Thursday, the number of people quarantined in the eight districts of the State has gone down to 3,770. There are 455 quarantine centres in the State.

Two weeks ago on June 15, the number of people in the quarantines was 15,581. Many of them were sent home after testing negative for Corona Virus, while those who tested positive were taken to isolation centres for treatment, says the Ministry of Social Development.
However, the number of those in home quarantine is on the rise. As of July 15, the number of people in home quarantine was 11,643 but the number rose to 18,560 in two weeks’ time.

Of the total 44,232 people tested for Corona Virus in the State, 37,085 tested negative, while 3,544 including 220 women tested positive. Laboratory test result of 3,603 people is yet to be received.

Likewise, the number of people who have recovered from the deadly virus has reached 1,923, with three deaths so far.RSS

COVID-19 : 80 per cent infected of Karnali recover

Surkhet, July 4 : The number of people recovering from Corona Virus in Karnali has surpassed the number of infected. On Friday alone, 51 infected including two women returned home after recovery.

Of them 31 were undergoing treatment at the Dullu hospital in Dailekh, 12 in the State hospital, six in the Salkot isolation and two in the Tanthikandh isolation centre in Dailekh, according to chief of the State Health Services Division Dr Laxmi Narayan Tiwari. The total number of people who have recovered from the deadly virus so far has reached 1,178.

Presently, the number of active case in Karnali is 305. With eight new cases reported in Narayan municipality and one in Dungeswar on Friday, the total number of infected has reached 1,483 in the State. Of them, 105 are locally infected while the remaining were people who had returned from neighbouring India.

The locally infected includes health workers and security personnel and people’s representatives working in the quarantine and isolation centres. Of them, 23 are health workers, 53 security personnel, three people’s representatives and 15 locals, said health education officer of the Division, Nawaraj Kandel. However, most of them have recovered.The death toll from Corona Virus infection in Karnali remains six so far.RSS

FNJ urges media houses to remunerate working journalists and media workers

Kaski, July 1 : Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ)’s Gandaki State chapter and Kaski district chapter have expressed serious concern over the situation wherein working journalists and media workers are being deprived of remuneration and other facilities since long.

Issuing separate press releases on Tuesday, the two chapters have urged the media houses to routinely provide with remuneration, not to shut the operation of media in any pretexts, stop expelling journalists from their regular work and also not to force journalists to stay on non-salaried leave.

In the statement issued by State committee general secretary Ganesh Poudel, media houses were urged to stop relieving journalists from their work in the pretext of COVID-19, denying journalists of their salary and facilities and unilaterally slashing the existing salary scale as well as to fully comply with the Working Journalists Act.

Likewise, Kaski chapter chair Deependra Shrestha issued the press release and warned to launch any pressure-creating struggle for the professional safety and respect for working journalists.

The district chapter also urged the working journalists and media workers to institutionally report their problems to FNJ through email or other communication medium.

In addition, FNJ has clarified that it would consistently hold dialogue and discuss with the stakeholders as per the need but would not compromise with anybody on the issue of working journalists.RSS

NSU to launch nationwide campaign on education and learning

Kathmandu, July 1 : Nepali Student Union, a student wing of the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC), is launching a nationwide campaign ‘Study in homes, learning in settlement’.

Issuing a press release on Tuesday, NSU president Rajib Dhungana said the national drive would be put in place for advancing student-focused alternative learning.

Likewise, NSU would also monitor the situation of quarantines across the district, availability of PCR tests and the state of treatment service delivered by the hospitals.

President Dhungana pledged that the free textbooks meant for the students of community schools would be handed to the students reaching out their homes.

Likewise, NSU general secretary Deepak Bhattarai said they would also monitor the private boarding schools in the districts to stop charging fee of the period when the educational institutions remained closed.

He also informed that the NSU has already made a circular to all the districts to organize blood donation and sapling plantation across the country on July 2 (Thursday) to mark the 96th birth anniversary of the NC’s former President and ex-Prime Minister the late Girija Prasad Koirala.RSS

Ten more PCR labs in the offing

KATHMANDU, June 27 : The Ministry of Health and Population is to establish 10 more laboratories in order to carry out test for Corona Virus through the Polymerase Chain Reaction method. The labs will be established in 10 different locations as an effort to expand the scope of COVID-19 tests, said coordinator of the Ministry’s Incident Command System Dr Gunaraj Lohani.

Accordingly, the PCR labs will be set up in Mechi hospital, Dadeldhura hospital, Dailkeh hospital, National Ayurved Research and Training Centre, Kathmandu, Armed Police Hospital, Balambu, Palpa hospital, Dhaulagiri hospital, Dhankuta hospital, Nepal Police and Nepali Army hospitals in the capital. Presently, PCR test for Corona Virus takes place in 23 different laboratories across the country.

With the new additions, as many as 10,000 tests can be done in a single day. Currently, 6,000 tests are being done in a day. So far, 206,271 PCR tests have been carried out.RSS

Six industries penalized for flouting standards

KATHMANDU, June 27 : The Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology has punished six industries for not adhering to the Nepal Standards.

The decision to penalize the industries was reached after a sample taken of the goods produced by those industries showed that the quality standards were not met. The samples were collected during a surprise monitoring carried out in the local market.

The NBSM on Friday took legal action against the Reliance Supertech Cement private limited, Bara, International Cement private limited, Parsa, Everest Gas Industry private limited, Kathmandu, Agni Cement, Rupandehi, Sarbottam Cement, Nawalparasi and Kamal Rolling Mills, Morang. Among them, the license of Reliance Cement and International Cement has been annulled, while the license of Everest Gas has been withheld. Likewise, clarification has been sought from other industries.

The action was taken as per Rule 16 of Nepal Standards (accreditation mark) Acts, 2037 and its regulations, said the Bureau Director General Biswababu Pudasaini. During the lockdown imposed to stem the spread of the Corona Virus, the Bureau had collected nearly 100 samples of goods produced by various industries across the country.RSS

Karnali: 1,433 infected with 26 new cases

KATHMANDU, June 27 : Twenty-six more new cases of Corona Virus have been confirmed in Karnali state. With the new cases confirmed on Friday, the total number of infected has reached 1,433 in Karnali.

Of the new cases, 12 are from Surkhet, five from Dailekh, three from Salyan, two from Jajarkot and one from Mugu, according to the Karnali Social Development Ministry, Health Service Division.

The tests were confirmed at the Karnali state hospital and Livestock Disease Research Laboratory in Surkhet, said chief of the division Dr Laxmi Narayan Tiwari. Some health workers and security persons are also among those infected.

Meanwhile, the number of people who recovered from the Corona Virus has reached 720. Likewise, six people have succumbed to the virus so far in Karnali.RSS

Incidents of rape on the rise in Bhojpur

KATHMANDU, June 27 : Incidents of rape has been reported to be increasing in the district as of late. More than 70 per cent of the cases registered at the local authorities are related to rape, says data from the district attorney office.

Of the 152 criminal cases registered at the office and through the district administration office in the current fiscal year, 70 per cent were related to rape. The number of cases has also gone up due to the information shared about the existing laws at the local level and subsequent reporting, said district attorney Pramod Bhattarai. However, the incidents of divorce have gone down in the period.

Organized crime has also been found to have increased during the period. Likewise, the cases of polygamy have also gone down. Due to rising legal awareness, the number of people coming to seek justice is on the rise, Bhattarai said.RSS/PHOTO: dhakatribune.com

Sudur Paschim: 221 more infected with Corona Virus

KATHMANDU, June 27 :The total number of Corona Virus cases in the Sudur Pachim State has reached 1,859, with 221 new cases confirmed on Friday.
Of them, 186 were confirmed positive in the test carried out in the National Public Health Laboratory, Kathmandu and 35 at the lab of the Seti State Hospital, Dhangadi, according to the Health Division of the Social Development Ministry.

The new cases have been reported in Kailali (37), Kanchanpur (44), Doti (71), Dadeldhura (0ne), Darchula (three), Bajhang (nine), Bajura (27), Baitedi (25) and Accham (two), according to Chief of the Division Narendra Singh Karki. Among the districts, the highest number of cases so far has been reported in Kailali with 553 cases.

Of the 119,761 tests carried out through both PCR and RDT method, only 15,319 has been carried out through the relatively reliable PCR method. The only laboratory in the State located at the Seti State Hospital has not been able to carry out enough PCR tests for lack of required tools, human resources as well as capacity of the testing machine. As a result, swab samples are being sent to the capital.
Meanwhile, of the infected, 68 returned home on Friday after recovery. So far, 528 people have recovered. RSS
