Election Commission to update voter list

Kathmandu, January 2

The Election Commission has decided to update the voters list from January 28 to February 3, following the government decision to hold midterm elections for the House of Representatives on April 30 and May 10.

The EC has also urged everyone to update their information, make corrections to their names, remove double names, remove names of those deceased and inform the authorities about their migration.

However, only persons whose names have already been registered before December 21 and those who were above 18 years at that time are eligible to do so as per existing rules.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari had, on December 20, announced the election date after the government recommended dissolution the HoR on the same day. The existing election rules do not allow people, who turn 18 after the announcement of election date, to cast votes.

The EC has urged everyone to update their details at the administrative centres of all local governments across the country.

Despite, the government’s call to hold elections, a large faction of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), along with the main opposition Nepali Congress have been staging protest programmes across the country saying that the government’s move to dissolve the House was ‘unconstitutional.’

At least 12 cases have been filed at the Supreme Court against the government move to dissolve the House and announcement of mid-term elections.
