Chaturmas: A 4-month festival has begun among Hindus in Nepal, India. What is it all about?

While the mainstream media outlets were flooded with the news of recent tensions in the ruling Nepal Communist Party, many Nepali households were busy planting and worshipping tulasi, also known as holy basil, at their yards this Wednesday morning. They were preparing for the beginning of the four-month festival—Chaturmas.

Beginning the day of Harishayini Ekadashi in June/July, Hindus in Nepal and India mark a special period dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his embodiments for the next four months until the day of Haribodhini Ekadashi in October/November, and it is known as the Chaturmas (literally, four months).

This long festival sounds strange for the majority of the new generation in Nepal though it still holds significance in the lives of their predecessors. So what is it anyway?

The four holy months

Nawa Raj Ghimire, who teaches Puranas at Valmeeki Vidyapeeth, explains the Chaturmas is the holy period of four months from the day of Harishayini Ekadashi until Haribodhini Ekadashi every year. It is believed that Lord Vishnu sleeps and goes into a deep meditation, also acknowledged as Yog Nidra, according to him.

During the Chaturmas, no auspicious functions like wedding are performed as it is the time when gods and goddesses are not meant to be disturbed by their devotees. This is the time for penance, performing austerities, fasting and tenacities. Those who take the Chaturmas brata abstain from consuming specific food items marked ‘impure’, have only a single meal in every day and fast on every Ekadashi each fortnight. They also worship tulasi through these months.

Hari Om Bidari, a priest, describes, “To please lord Vishnu and attain his blessings, various Puranas like Shrimad Bhagawat Mahapuran, Haribansa Purana, and Shiva Purana are recited during this period. Vishnu mantras and hymns are chanted.”

Bidari informs that many major festivals of Hindus like Guru Purnima, Haritalika Teej, Nag Panchami, Krishna Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh Chaturthi, Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath Puja are celebrated during these four months of the Chaturmas.

Two great Ekadashis

The period is sandwiched between two great Ekadashis which Nepali society calls ‘Thuli Ekadashis’, or ‘Maha Ekadashis’ according to priests.

The first day of the Chaturmas is called Harishayani Ekadashi; it is considered one of the most significant Ekadashis of the total 24 Ekadashis in a year in the lunar calendar.

Harishayani Ekadashi, also known as Devsayani Ekadashi, is celebrated on the eleventh day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon or the bright fortnight) in the month of Ashadh, the third month of the year as per the lunar calendar.

Ghimire says, “Harishayani is the combination of two words ‘Hari’, the other name of Lord Vishnu (the preserver) and ‘Shayani’ which means sleep. On this day, the lord, being exhausted of destroying demons and evils, goes to sleep in Ksheersagar (cosmic ocean of milk) on the Shesh Nag (cosmic serpent) for four months.”

“He wakes up on Haribodhini Ekadashi in the month of Kartik,” Ghimire adds, “Lord Vishnu right after two months of Harishayani Ekadashi changes his sleeping position and this day is observed as Haripariwartini Ekadashi.”

On the day of Harishayini Ekadashi, Hindu devotees wake up early in the morning, take a holy bath and worship Lord Vishnu, fasting for the entire day. They take vows, chant mantras, recite hymns and listen to religious stories.

Likewise, the devotees abstain from consuming grains, cereals, beans and certain vegetables and spices like garlic, tomato and onion. Also, they perform a ritual by planting and worshipping tulasi plants, sown on Nirjala Ekadashi, exactly one month before the Harishayini Ekadashi day, in front of or near their houses.

On Harishayini Ekadashi, devotees visit and worship Vishnu shrines. The major Vishnu shrines in the valley are Ichangu Narayan, Changu Narayan, Bishankhu Narayan, Shesh Narayan, and Narayansthan in Budanilakantha.

It is believed that those who observe fasting (brata) this day get rid of all their sins and the Lord grants them with happiness, wisdom, sound health, peace and prosperity.

Each of the 24 Ekadashis has its own story on why the Ekadashi day is considered holy. Whereas all these 24 days are considered important, the two at the beginning and the end of the Chaturmas are additionally valued, according to priests. They observe that the devotees who fail to maintain fasting rules on other Ekadashis also fast on these two days.

Significance of tulasi

Tulasi, also known as holy basil, plants are a part of every Hindu household in Nepal. Whereas the families worship them every day, the worship turns more special during the four months of the Chaturmas.

Ghimire explains, “Tulasi is valued both religiously and scientifically as Harishayani Ekadashi marks the commencement of both the rainy season and the Chaturmas. This time is the appropriate time to plant, grow as well as worship tulasi. The significance of tulasi as a medicinal herb is already proven.”

In every puja of Lord Vishnu, it is mandatory to offer the leaves of tulasi. This is why tulasi is planted on Harishayani Ekadashi and worshipped all these four months or the sleeping time of lord Vishnu until he wakes up on Haribodhini Ekadasi.

Gunmen kill 24 people in attack on Mexican drug rehab center

MEXICO CITY: At least 24 people were killed in an armed attack on a drug rehabilitation facility in the central Mexican city of Irapuato, Mexican police said on Wednesday, underlining the challenge the government has in fulfilling a pledge to stop gang violence.

Police in the city in Guanajuato state said the gunmen also wounded seven in what was the second such attack to take place in Irapuato during the past month. The attack was also confirmed by a federal government official.

Photos from the scene shared by police with local reporters showed at least 11 prone and bloodied bodies lying in a room.

The attack was one of the worst mass slayings since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office 19 months ago pledging to reduce record levels of violence. But homicides hit a new record last year and are trending higher still in 2020.

On June 6, 10 men were killed when gunmen opened fire in a rehabilitation center for addicts in Irapuato. It was not immediately clear if the same facility was hit both times.

KATHMANDU, JULY 1

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority has filed a chargesheet at the Special Court against Rajkumar Shakya, chief of Khotang-based Federal Water Supply and Sewerage Management Project, under the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management.

He has been charged of allegedly accumulating disproportionate assets worth around Rs 107 million.

The anti-graft body said Shakya, who is also a senior divisional engineer, disclosed the income source of only Rs 54 million out of the assets worth around Rs 107 million he had reportedly earned after joining the civil service on 15 May 1992 as an overseer.

According to the CIAA, Shakya had accumulated illegal assets of around Rs 107 million till mid-February 2020, but failed to establish the legitimate sources and supporting evidence, said Joint Secretary Pradip Kumar Koirala, CIAA spokesperson.

He was found purchasing lands, a house and a vehicle in his and wife’s name besides transferring a parcel of land to his niece to cover up corruption. The CIAA had also found a huge amount of money deposited in his account of several banks and financial institutions. “He accumulated disproportionate property through corruption.

He used to demand hefty commission from contractors for water supply and sewerage projects. He collected around Rs 10 million from contractors as commission in the fiscal 2018/19 alone,” the CIAA said in a press release issued yesterday.

The CIAA has sought the recovery of Rs 107 million along with a fine equivalent to the amount from Shakya as per Section 20 of the Prevention of Corruption Act-2002.

The anti-graft body has also listed his wife Prabha as a defendant in the chargesheet for confiscation of illegal assets.

Central bank mulls bringing down loan interest to single digit

KATHMANDU, JULY 1

The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) is formulating the Monetary Policy for 2020-21 with due focus on bringing down the interest rate and restructuring loans.

As per NRB sources, different measures are being introduced through the Monetary Policy to bring interest rate on loan to single digit, that is, around nine per cent. Similarly, the Monetary Policy is expected to restructure both interest on loan throughout the lockdown period and also restructure the loan itself.

“The Monetary Policy will primarily focus on addressing interest rate and loan with acknowledgement that businesses and the economy today has been hit hard by the COVID-19,” informed an NRB source seeking anonymity.

Though NRB has not finalised the date for unveiling the Monetary Policy for the upcoming fiscal year, it will be brought within this month.

Among other stakeholders, the business community is eagerly waiting for the Monetary Policy and wants the NRB to address their concerns citing that the budget could only partially address their recommendations.

“Along with restructuring loan and interest rate payment period for businesses that have been affected by the current crisis, the Monetary Policy will also facilitate in bringing down interest rate on loan, which is the major demand of the business community today,” said the NRB official. Along with this, the Monetary Policy will also introduce few measures to effectively implement the refinancing loan facility of the central bank.

As declared by the government earlier, the central bank is offering Rs 100 billion in refinancing facility to businesses affected by COVID-19 at five per cent interest rate to help them sustain and revive. “The Monetary Policy will also introduce measures to ensure financial stability in the country,” added the NRB source.

Meanwhile, Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari, a few days ago, had said that NRB would give priority to recommendations of the business community in the Monetary Policy. However, Adhikari had informed that prime focus would be given to borrowers of banks and financial institutions.

The business community has long been demanding that the government, especially NRB, to bring down interest rate to single digit and maintain stability in the interest rate. Similarly, businesses have also urged the central bank to manage refinancing loan facility for businesses at two per cent with maturity period of two years.

West Ham beat Chelsea 3-2 to boost EPL survival bid

LONDON: Andriy Yarmolenko boosted West Ham’s hopes of staying in the Premier League by clinching a 3-2 victory over Champions League-chasing Chelsea on Wednesday.

The substitute completed a counterattack started by Declan Rice in the 89th minute to send West Ham three points clear of the relegation zone with six games remaining.

“This season so many things have not gone our way,” said Michail Antonio, who started as West Ham’s lone striker. “But today it didn’t stop us, we just kept going, and we got the victory.

“It was hard, they play unbelievable football, and they kept pinning us in. It is a massive result.”

It had looked like being a night of frustration for David Moyes’ side, which was denied an opener after a lengthy VAR review. That was followed at the other end by conceding a penalty that was converted by Willian.

Although Tomas Soucek leveled in first-half stoppage time and Antonio put the hosts in front at the start of the second half, Willian looked like recovering a point for Chelsea when he netted for a second time in the 72nd minute.

With the loss, fourth-place Chelsea is now only two points ahead of Manchester United and Wolverhampton in the pursuit of Champions League qualification.

It halted Chelsea’s momentum after beating deposed champion Manchester City last Thursday and then reaching the FA Cup semifinals by eliminating Leicester on Sunday.

They couldn’t blame a hostile atmosphere, though, as more than 60,000 seats were empty at the Olympic Stadium due to the coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

But the wait for a VAR ruling seems even longer when the stadium falls completely silent — as it did in east London for more than three minutes after Soucek’s celebrations were curtailed.

Souček scrambled the ball into the net after connecting with a corner from Bowen in the 34th minute. But the VAR ruled that Antonio, who was flat on the ground looking away from goal, was in an offside position and obstructing the view of Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The lengthy delay to assess the footage showed it wasn’t a clear decision to make, which only deepened the West Ham irritation.

“I was angry,” Moyes said. “Too many small decisions had gone against us. It didn’t feel right at the time.”

But the coaches and players are told to maintain social distancing rather than confronting match officials.

Play resumed and soon there was a penalty ruling that went against West Ham and survived a VAR review when Christian Pulisic’s fell over after being caught by Diop. Willian converted from the penalty spot to compound West Ham’s frustrations.

But in stoppage time, Chelsea was beaten at another set piece as Souček headed in from Bowen’s corner.

Chelsea was picked apart again six minutes into the second half, with a slick move down the left.

Declan Rice played a one-two with Pablo Fornals before passing to Antonio on the edge of the penalty area.

Antonio was nudged over by Antonio Rüdiger but, rather than appealing for a penalty, he got back up on his feet. As the ball was recycled, it found its way to Bowen on the right and he squared for Antonio to slide it into the net.

Chelsea equalized when Willian’s free kick hit the inside of the post and beat the outstretched goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański.

Pulisic thought Fabianski had been beaten again with a low shot but it crept wide of the post. The miss proved costly.

Rice seized possession on the edge of his own area and launched a high pass to Antonio on the halfway line. The ball was sent crossfield to Yarmolenko, who cut past Rüdiger and struck into the bottom corner.
