Both the Dahal-Nepal and Oli-led faction have claimed the legitimacy of the party, following its split. The Dahal-Nepal faction of NCP reached the EC with a rally and submitted a memorandum to Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya, stating that their faction was legitimate based on the constitution and existing law.

The Dahal-Nepal faction also claimed that the election symbol ‘Sun’ belonged to it.

“The EC has already maintained the records of party statute, number of central committee members and their personal details at the time of registration of the party. The records will serve as evidences to the party legitimacy and election symbol,”

Dahal told the mediapersons.

“We have 315 out of 441 central committee members nominated at the time of registration of the party with the EC. Majority always prevails.

We are confident that the EC will decide on legitimacy of the party as soon as possible in line with its tradition, statute and the existing law,” he added.

The Dahal-Nepal faction has also submitted a minute of party decisions made by two-third majority. Upon receipt of the memorandum, Chief Election Commissioner Thapaliya pledged to finalise the issue of the party legitimacy at the earliest.

Earlier, the Dahal-Nepal faction staged a peaceful protest in Maitighar against the dissolution of the House of Representatives by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Dahal, Nepal, Jhalanath Khanal, Narayankaji Shrestha and Pampha Bhusal were among the leaders of the Dahal-Nepal faction participating in the protest. They also displayed placards reading slogans like ‘We are here’, ‘We don’t accept the constitutional coup’ and ‘Scrap the decision of HoR dissolution’.
