Bankrupt Nepal Airlines Corporation has decided to dispose of all six China manufactured aircraft saying that it caused loss worth billions of rupees. Only two aircraft were providing service, whereas, the rest were grounded at the Tribhuvan International Airport since they arrived in Kathmandu. The Airlines has clarified that due to lack of pilots and short supply of spare parts, most of the aircraft were grounded for years. Aviation experts say that due to lack of management efficiency, the Airlines was unable to earn profit from China built aircraft.
Sources in NAC, a government undertaking, say that the airlines is planning to purchase stall aircraft by disposing of all China-made aircraft as there is an attractive amount of commission while procuring and disposing of aircraft. These days, NAC and all other government undertakings have become the venue for rampant corruption and they have become a white elephant for the government.
Such failure of all the government undertakings is related to the political system that we have adopted.
Open border and Covid-19
Don’t know, where are those who are predicting about benefits of open borders with India? What do they think about uncontrolled spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country at a time when our international flights are closed for months? No doubt, people migrated from India have carried the pandemic and transmitted in the community.
There are plenty of negative things that have impacted our society while keeping Nepal-India borders opened. Are the government and security organs taking a lesson from the past mistakes?
Lockdown or else?
Health experts are continuously saying to conduct throat swab test at mass in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic. The government didn’t respond to experts’ advice. Now, the Covid-19 infected cases have crossed 20 thousand and there is the suspect that the pandemic has already reached to the community level, which is very much alarming. The flow of people entering from India has not been stopped. Also, the flow of people entering Kathmandu from different parts of the country has increased. If the government cannot stop people entering Nepal from India, it should conduct throat swab test to all those arriving from India at the Nepal-India entry point and keep them at the holding centre unless they are confirmed Covid-19 negative. Also conducting PCR test on those who are entering the Valley from outside, this is the only alternative to cope with the pandemic.
Besides, the role of the general public is also vital in coping with the pandemic. They should follow the guidelines prescribed by the health experts – frequently washing hands with soap, using a mask, maintaining physical distancing, avoiding crowds and meetings.
Neglecting experts’ advice, the government is thinking about imposing lockdown again, according to reports!
