Kathmandu, 30 May : Environmentalists and clean energy producers have flayed the government’s decision to impose a massive tax on electric vehicles (EVs).
While unveiling the federal budget for fiscal 2020-21 on Thursay, Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada announced imposition of 80 per cent customs duty on EVs, along with 40 per cent to 80 per cent excise duty, depending on the capacity of the vehicles.
Earlier, the government had been charging only 10 percent customs duty, 13 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) and 5 percent road tax on EVs. The new provision will double the price of EVs .
