KATHMANDU: The Press Council Nepal and the Federation of Nepali Journalists jointly issued the ‘Journalistic Code of Conduct 2016’ with an objective to make the profession more dignified, amid a function at the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas on Thursday.
PCN Chairman Borna Bahadur Karki and FNJ President Mahendra Bista jointly launched the code at the programme organised to celebrate the 47th PCN anniversary today.
The code of conduct was also handed over to President Bidya Devi Bhandari after the issuance.
Speaking at the programme, Karki said, “The code of conduct was released to make journalism more responsible and accountable.”
“The previous code of conduct had mainly focused on print media only. The new one has included broadcast and online media as well,” added Karki.
National and international codes had also been included in the new Journalistic Code of Conduct.
With the issuance of new code of conduct, the existing Journalistic Code of Conduct 2003 has been scrapped.
According to Dipak Adhikari, an officer at the Council, the new code of conduct has 15 major points about norms that must be followed in journalism. The set of rules also states that the media houses can make their own code of conduct. The Council, however, will monitor its implementation.
