Kathmandu, 28 December: As Nepal Communist Party chairman Pushpakamal Dahal cancelled his flight to Kathmandu from Chitwan, his electoral constituency, on Thursday, the entire schedule of electing new speaker has been postponed.
Dahal was scheduled to fly for Kathmandu at 3 pm on Thursday. At the last hours, he cancelled the flight.
Along with cancellation of Dahal’s flight, it was speculated that the two chairmen are yet to reach to a consensus on the candidate of the speaker.
The Parliament secretariat had already developed the election schedule for electing the new speaker, however, the Parliament was adjourned until 1 January 2020 by suspending the election programme. The Parliament’s working schedule set for Friday, 28 January was election of the speaker, which has been affected due to the delayed decision of the two chairmen on selecting the candidate to the post of speaker.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has wished to reward the speaker’s post to Subhas Nembang. On the other hand, Dahal is in favour of Agni Sapkota. Meanwhile, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari has favoured Shivamaya Tumbahamphe, according to reports.
