Jasuda Memorial Award handed over to Devendra Shakten

Kathmandu, 13 July: This year’s Jasuda Memorial Award has been handed over to literate Devendra Shakten amidst a programme organised by the Bhanu Prativa Samrakchan Committee, Ilam on Sunday. The Award is comprised of 11150 rupees along with a letter of appreciation.

Mahesh Basnet, Mayor, Ilam Municipality, handed over the cash prize and a letter of appreciation to poet Shakten.

Speaking on the occasion, Basnet said that one should not needed to go to Kathmandu to become a literate or an artist as Shakten is the example of it.

Basnet commended Shakten’s literary works and recalled that Shakten was also his classmate during his college days.

Ilam’s senior citizen Juddha Baidhaya said that Shakten as a creative writer is enriched with the deep study.

Bimal Baidhaya, chairman of the Bhanu Pratibha Samrakchan Samiti, Ilam, expressed his happiness for being able to honour to such a personality having literary height.

Meanwhile, poet Prakash Thamsuhang shed light on Shakten’s creative writings.

Shakten from Chimphula, Ward No 3, Falgunanda Rural Municipality, Panchthar, is involved in creative writing for the last three decades. Born on 4 May 1059, Shakten is the youngest son of Hari Prasad and Manmaya Rai. After completing his college education, Shakten started teaching profession along with creative writing. A book, “Dantyakatha Ko Desh”, a compilation of poems penned by him has been published, whereas, other creative writings are in the process of publication in the book form. His creative writings are published in different newspapers and contemporary collections.

Every year, the Committee is rewarding local talents on lthe iterary field for the last two years.

Earlier, poets Anwesh Gurung and Balika Thapaliya have been rewarded with the Award.

The Award has been established in memory of late journalist and poet Jasuda Pradhan. Late Pradhan, the managing editor of the People’s Review English weekly, was from Ilam.
