Youth take to street spontaneously against government
By Our Reporter
Angry youth from across the country came to the street protesting against the government for resorting to corruption and failing to control the spread of virus in Nepal.
The demonstrations which began peacefully from Baluwatar spread in other cities in no time. The unnecessary use of force against the agitating youth who were staging demonstrations peacefully by maintaining social distancing, added fuel to fire prompting more youths to join the demonstrations.
The youth in their 20s have raised the issue of corruption in purchasing medical supplies, poor management of quarantine, rescuing of stranded Nepalis from abroad and testing through PCR among others. All the demands were relevant although a few said the timing was bad as the country was preparing to amend the constitution to change the Coat of Arms keeping in it the updated map of Nepal. Moreover, the government and people loyal to the ruling parties interpreted the demonstrations sponsored by India and the American Embassy in Kathmandu, which was not true as the youth were not associated with any political parties.
When the people loyal to ruling parties, specially the group close to Prime Minister Oli, claimed that the demonstrations were staged to oust the government in Indian and American design, it only infuriated the public and the protests became more powerful.
Moreover, a few Indian TV channels portrayed the demonstrations as against the updated map of Nepal in increase the suspicion of people close to power.
However, the youth has raised Nepali people’s issue and it received wide support, prompting government to make public the expenditure made for controlling and treating the COVID-19 and to make commitment to increase PCR tests.
Had the people in power and their blind supporters undermined the protests, the government would have been in risk, as the protests were swelling and there were chances of infiltration of other unwanted national and international forces to fish in troubled waters.
