Government’s bankrupt syndrome

Government’s bankrupt syndrome

Kathmandu, 16 June: The Supreme Court on 15 June, cancelled the appeal for vacate on the SC’s interim order to allow at least 30 days’ time after end of lockdown in the country to the taxpayers to clear their tax.

The government had appealed to the SC for a vacate on SC’s previous decision stating that the government has no money even to distribute salary.

Amidst lockdown in the country, the government had issued a notice to clear all taxes earlier to end of the current fiscal year.

Against such a notice, a petition was filed in the SC, on which, the SC had given a stay order notice asking the government to provide 30 days’ time to the taxpayers.

Meanwhile, along with opening of the government offices after prolonged lockdown on 15 June, the Transportation Department has issued a notice stating that fine against renew fail of vehicles due to the lockdown cannot be exempted.

Odd to note, vehicle owners could not renew their vehicles as the government offices were closed due to the lockdown. Therefore, this is not the fault of the clients but they are compelled to pay fine. It is believed that the government is facing severe financial crunch, therefore, it is compelled to collect revenue plus fine from service recipients.

It is surprising that even after facing such a serious financial crunch, the government has not launched effective programme to cut down unnecessary government expenditure.
